Kinesio Taping

Kinesio Taping

What Is the Kinesio Taping Method?

A definitive rehabilitative taping technique, the Kinesio Taping method is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.

The tape is latex-free and is wearable for days at a time, safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric. This therapeutic taping method successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions, offering the patient the support he needs, as well as rehabilitating the affected area.

How Does It Work?

The Kinesio Taping method targets different receptors within the somatosensory system, alleviating pain and facilitating lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. The skin lifting affects forms convolutions in the skin, increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas.

Benefits include:

  • assisting in returning the body to homeostasis
  • enhancing performance
  • positive physiological effects on the skin, lymphatic and circulatory system, muscles, fascia, ligaments, tendons and joints
  • preventing injury
  • promoting good circulation and healing
  • reducing pain and inflammation
  • re-educating the neuromuscular system

Kinesio Taping can be used in conjunction with a multitude of other treatments and modalities, being effective during the rehabilitative and chronic phases on an injury. It can also be used for preventative measures.

A full assessment of the patient is needed, as in some cases underlying conditions may require treatment. Evaluation and assessment are keys in the treatment of any clinical condition in order to get the desired results. The information gained from the assessments will allow for the proper treatment protocol to be laid out. Assessments should include:

  • gait assessment
  • manual muscle testing
  • other orthopedic special tests deemed necessary
  • range of motion testing
